Asghar Stanikzai new Captain

The Afghanistan Cricket team is going to be captained by Asghar Stanikzai from here on in.

Asghar has got the charge after the stepping down of the experienced all rounder Mohammad Nabi who had been at the helm for Afghanistan for the last couple of years.
Nabi captained Afghanistan in a lot of big tournaments including this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup.

The biggest achievement of Nabi’s captaincy was that he managed to guide Afghanistan to a win against a test playing nation Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2014.

The reason because of which Nabi is believed to have resigned is his own deteriorating form.

He could not perform to his reputation in the last season, either with the bat or the ball. Watching him play, it seemed as if the pressure of captaincy was getting on him a little bit.

So, to probably relieve himself from all the responsibilities and play his natural game, he opted to step down.

As far as Stanikzai, the new captain is concerned, he is not a superstar like Nabi, but, he is a reliable middle order player, a right handed batsman who mainly bats 4 or 5 and is known for his solidity.

That game against Bangladesh which Afghanistan won to achieve their biggest feat ever, Stanikzai was the top scorer for them, scoring 91.

Other players who might have been in contention for captaincy would have been Samiullah Shenwari and Navroj Mangal.

Shenwari was the biggest contributor for Afghanistan in the World Cup and it was because of his innings that the Blues were able to secure their solitary win in the tournament against Scotland.

He is a fierce hitter of the Cricket ball.
Mangal is an opening batsman and has captained Afghanistan before.
